Its important to be aware of whats in your home that could cause skin irritation for your pet. Allergies are a common reason for cats to develop flaky skin. Some lower quality cat foods do not contain them and even premium foods may not provide enough for your cat.
Scratching of the head and neck can indicate a food allergy. Cats who sunbathe also may develop a sun burn. Its usually nothing serious but have your veterinarian take a look. Typically a diet that is low in essential fatty acids has a detrimental effect on skin condition leading to excessive scale and skin flakes. Dry flaky skin might appear on indoor cats during the wintertime when your heating system takes a lot of moisture out of the environment.
